Unfaithful Servants on Denman Island

The Unfaithful Servants are a blue grass band that we "discovered" last year when Holly bought tickets to celebrate Richard's birthday while we camped on Hornby Island. They are an amazing group and the talent and skill of the whole band is truly remarkable. The fiddle player and the mandolin player are so talented and the chemistry between them so electric that we couldnt resist a second listen when we leaned they were playing on Denman Island, May 24, 2025. Spoiler alert... we weren't disappointed!

It wasn't possible to stay for the entire performance and make it home on the last ferry from Denman to Buckley Bay so we needed to spend the night. Vincent to the rescue. Holly is subscribed to HipCamp which is an app that helps find "non-traditional" campsites. This one didn't underachieve the non-traditional experience! It was labled as Farm Field #2 (we aren't sure there was a Farm Field #1!). A few pictues can be found below but in general, it was a flat area on Olaf's property next to a pasture. There was a market tent that didn't open, a fire pit that looked like it was "visited" from a provincial campsite, a pit toilet that made us happy we have our own toilet facility and that's about it. It was very quiet later at night and we did have a fire. It was close to the community center and the ferry and it was "only" $55/night plus taxes (!).

Did I mention it was worth it? It was. Like our experience at the small community center on Hornby last year, this community center was interesting in architecture, well attended by local Denman-ites, and had an excellent stage with great acoustics. After two ovations and extra music, we left the center with ringing ears and happy hearts! We will follow these guys!

Back to our camp for drinks by the fire, crib and a sound sleep in Farm field #2.

The next day, we left our camp and visited Chicadee lake for a short walk. Such a pretty lake with a great path around it. This is a bass lake as compared to the stocked trout lakes that are more common here. No power boats are allowed on this water supply so it was very peaceful and quiet. The lake is apparently good for swimming except for the "itch" and it was walking distance from Farm Field #2. I think we will be back!

When we got to Buckley bay via the cable ferry, we decided to check out Spider Lake provincial park and Horne Lake before heading home.

Spider lake is day-use-only but it is a great spot for lunch or a canoe. We saw people fishing and others just playing in the water. We had lunch here before heading to Horne Lake for a look.

Horne Lake is home to the provincial cave park and a regional camping park. The park is amazing and I predict that Vincent will spend a few "shoulder season" nights here. Holly and I have done the caves in the past but plan to do them again together in the near future.

After abusing Vincent on a very bumpy road back to the highway, we headed home with lot's of memories from a short overnight on Denman Island. Check out the Unfaithful Servants on YouTube!

About our Blog

Our blog is intended to keep our family and friends informed and entertained. We are constantly amazed with the beautiful places we visit with our favourite modes of travel and we want to share them with you.  Our travels are made in a 26' Tollycraft boat named Baywolf, a 1975 VW bus named Vincent, a Triumph Speedmaster named Speedy, our feet and our 16' Pelican canoe (it weighs 85lbs so it has different names depending on if we are paddling or portaging!).  We will document some of the ongoing upgrades and repairs and we will share some of our projects done through our little company, H&R Home and Yard.
