Day 1 began very early at Smonectem campsite in Sidney. At 6:00am were were on our way with BC Ferries carrying us to Tsawassen on the mainland. We drove straight through to a rest stop about half an hour past Golden. Weather was HOT and we took it easy up the long grades. We took Hwy 1 from Hope to Kamloops instead of the Coquihalla and we will take that way again. It was much prettier, easier on the VW and not much slower because we can't travel at the speeds that the Coquihalla allows anyway!

The rest stop was great as it was beside a river. It was also right in between the highway and a train track! Luckily, the early morning and the heat made sleep easy!!!

Day 2 began pretty early as well and we were on the road to our next stop which ended up being a free site about 10km outside Swift Current. It was a great spot with clean porta potti's, lots of room and a lot quieter than our earlier stops! We eat well on our trips and Holly crafted another delicious stirfry for dinner that night.

Vincent rolled over to 50,000km on this segment. Considering that we have only had the bus on the road since June 2019 after 5 years of restoration, we have adventured quite a lot in this 50 year old VW! Before that first trip to a music festival in Port Alberni, I had rolled the odometer back to 000000.0!

Day 3 started a bit later as we had scheduled to meet Holly's sister-in-law, Judy, in Moose Jaw at 10:00. No need to be on the road earlier than 8:00am! It was my first visit with Judy and we had a great time. Judy has a great attitude and a good sense of humour. After our visit, we were on the road to Weyburn.

It was hot and windy! The poor old bus had to work hard to maintain 95km/hr into the headwind.

We pulled into the campsite at Weyburn and were greeted by tons of family who were camped there already. We got set up and spent some time around the fire getting re-aquinted (and first time aquainted for Holly and for me with some of them!). The weather couldn't be better with warm winds and clear skies for the most part.

Day 4 is the wedding day! My sister Kate's daughter Miranda's first born, Carter, married Catherine! Holly and I dressed up (first time we have packed party garb in the bus!) and attended a wonderful ceremony at the Legion in Weyburn. Tonight is the dance and we are trying to stay clean at the campsite!

About our Blog

Our blog is intended to keep our family and friends informed and entertained. We are constantly amazed with the beautiful places we visit with our favourite modes of travel and we want to share them with you.  Our travels are made in a 26' Tollycraft boat named Baywolf, a 1975 VW bus named Vincent, a Triumph Speedmaster named Speedy, our feet and our 16' Pelican canoe (it weighs 85lbs so it has different names depending on if we are paddling or portaging!).  We will document some of the ongoing upgrades and repairs and we will share some of our projects done through our little company, H&R Home and Yard.
