Annual Trip to Hornby Island

Every year, over the weekend closest to May 9 (my birthday!), Holly and I go to site 22C at BradsDadsLand campground on Hornby Island. They have a unique program called “right of first refusal” that lets you reserve a specific site for a specific weekend indefinitely as long as you pay for the following year while you are there. There are a variety of sites from simple unserviced to full glamping. Check them out here:

Because this year was a milestone birthday (officially a senior citizen at age 65!), Kate drove out from Saskatchewan with her camper van, Potato, and joined us and Vincent in site 22C. It was Kate that discovered this site about 5 years ago and we have been going back ever since. Before we left home for the weekend, we had a birthday celebration at the local marina pub, The Shipyard, with Mollie and Mom and we celebrated Mothers Day on Monday night when we got home!

It takes about 2 hours of driving and two ferries to get to Hornby. One takes you from Buckley Bay, north of Qualicum Beach, to Denman Island. This one is a cable ferry. Then you have to drive across Denman Island to the ferry terminal that will take you to Hornby!

The weather was pretty good with only a little rain and lot’s of sun. The food was amazing as usual and we burned lots of wood in the fire pit. We did a bit of walking and also some bike riding. Hornby Island has a large sandy beach that makes this destination famous. Check out Hornby Island here! We have visited this island in Vincent and also in Someday, our sailboat. I’m sure we will stop by when we are out with Baywolf next year.

Here are a few pictures from our weekend. I’m working on a short video from the dash cam which I’ll post separately.

About our Blog

Our blog is intended to keep our family and friends informed and entertained. We are constantly amazed with the beautiful places we visit with our favourite modes of travel and we want to share them with you.  Our travels are made in a 26' Tollycraft boat named Baywolf, a 1975 VW bus named Vincent, a Triumph Speedmaster named Speedy, our feet and our 16' Pelican canoe (it weighs 85lbs so it has different names depending on if we are paddling or portaging!).  We will document some of the ongoing upgrades and repairs and we will share some of our projects done through our little company, H&R Home and Yard.
