Wallace Island Escape October 22 to 23

A married couple goes boating!

With winter on the horizon and my knee replacement surgery in just 10 days, we found time for a quick getaway on MV Baywolf to one of our favorite spots on Wallace Island. We were lucky and arrived at Conover Cove in dry weather and had the entire cove to ourselves. We took advantage of the dock and paid the small fee for our overnight stay. It’s a great convenience that we can now email funds for our stays. It saves the soggy or non-existent envelope system

We were still glowing with the experience of our wedding and had permanent smiles for the duration of our trip!

The transit to Wallace Island from home dock is only 12 nautical miles and took just under 2 hours on fair seas. We travelled North, keeping Saltspring Island to starboard (our right) and after passing between Saltspring and Penelakut Island, we rounded Southey Point and headed East to Conover Cove.

We couldn’t wait to get ashore to see if the Lobster mushrooms we found last year were back for us to forage. After checking our sign on the shack (which needs a little refreshing), we walked the trail to the southern end of the Island. We didn’t find a single lobster mushroom and wondered if we might be a week or two early. After checking the dinosaur egg on Panther Point, it was time to head back for dinner on Baywolf.

The next day, we decided to walk the rest of the island and hiked to Chivers Point. The entire Island is just over 3km but with the side trips, we probably did 5km over both days. Again, no mushrooms! The weather was perfect for late October and we left that afternoon with no complaints about our treatment from the universe.

Before tying up for the winter, we visited the fuel dock to replace all of the fuel we used in 2025. Baywolf carries 550 liters of midgrade gasoline. We were at 1/4 tank before filling up. You do the math… We are still trying to forget!!!

Knowing that knee surgery would keep us off the water for the majority of this winter, we double checked the dock lines and set up the dehumidifier. Holly will be keeping check and running the engine up to operating temp a few times over the cold months.

Here are a few pictures from the trip!

About our Blog

Our blog is intended to keep our family and friends informed and entertained. We are constantly amazed with the beautiful places we visit with our favourite modes of travel and we want to share them with you.  Our travels are made in a 26' Tollycraft boat named Baywolf, a 1975 VW bus named Vincent, a Triumph Speedmaster named Speedy, our feet and our 16' Pelican canoe (it weighs 85lbs so it has different names depending on if we are paddling or portaging!).  We will document some of the ongoing upgrades and repairs and we will share some of our projects done through our little company, H&R Home and Yard.
